State Representative Cam Ward
Legislative Session Survey

The 2008 Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature will begin on February 5th. Please take a moment to share your thoughts with me about the upcoming session in this survey below.

I would like to know what is important to you.

1.)  Medicaid costs are on the rise in Alabama. The current estimated shortfall for Medicaid funding in Alabama is $300 million for the upcoming fiscal year. Which of the following measures, if any, would you support to cover the shortfall?
Find and eliminate wasteful spending in state government.
Raise fees on licenses such as driver's licenses, hunting and fishing licenses
Raise taxes on items such as liquor, wine or tobacco products
Allow a vote of the people to legalize video poker at existing race tracks and tax it at a rate of 40 or 50 percent
Increase tax on off shore gas royalties
2.) Ethics reform is a topic that is always at the front of any debate during election campaigns but seem to be neglected once the legislature goes into session. What ethics reform bill would you like to see the legislature address? (please choose the three most important to you)
A Ban on PAC to PAC transfers
Placing a cap on the amount of campaign contributions a candidate can receive
Requiring all campaign disclosure forms to be filed over the internet.
Require any non-profit group that is trying to influence an election be required to disclose their donors
Penalties for false advertising during an election
Ban on state officials using tax dollars on public service announcements during election year
Prohibit lawmakers from holding two state jobs at the same time

Require any lobbyist who spends over $1 a day on legislators to report the expense

Give the Alabama Ethics Commission subpoena powers in ethics investigation

Require any lobbying restrictions to apply to the executive branch of government (currently the lobby laws only apply to the legislative branch)

Disclose on the internet all contracts that legislators have with other government institutions
Prohibit lobbyists from spending any money on meals, or anything else for legislators

3.) A bill has been pre-filed in the legislature that would allow college students who meet specific criteria to carry weapons on campus for self-protection. Do you favor or opposed such a law?

   Favor

  Oppose
