SHELBY COUNTY

Representative Cam Ward recently visited with the Pelham Pioneers at the new Pelham Senior Citizens Center

Shelby County was created by an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly on 7 February 1818, from former Creek Indian territory ceded in the Treaty of Fort Jackson on 9 August 1814. The county was formed out of the northern portion of what was then Montgomery County. Originally, Shelby County was one of the largest counties in the state. However, the state legislature soon began carving up the area to create other counties, including St. Clair County, Jefferson, Talladega, and Chilton counties. The marker for the geographic center for the state of Alabama can be found on the steps of Main Hall at the University of Montevallo.

Representative Ward represents parts of western Shelby County. House District 49 includes part of Pelham, Alabaster and Helena. This area of Shelby County is one of the fastest growing areas in Alabama and continues to be one of the most economically vibrant communities in the greater Birmingham area.

Representative Ward is proud of to be associated with several organizations in Shelby County including The American Village which allows one to travel back in time to the beginnings of our great nation. The American Village attracts young students from all of the country to learn about the basic foundations of our nation’s democracy. The Village has been recognized in several national publications and is truly one of Alabama’s best tourist attractions. Other attractions in House District 49 include the Oak Mountain Amphitheater which is considered one of Alabama’s premiere outdoor concert venues
