Rep. Ward Honored with National Humane Legislator Award

September 18, 2006 - Shelby County – Alabama State Representative Cam Ward was awarded the Humane State Legislator Award by the Humane Society of the United States on Monday September 18^th at the Alabaster City Council Meeting. According to the Humane Society of the United States, Rep. Ward received this recognition because of his continued support of animal friendly legislation in the Alabama Legislature that has passed and his work in fighting for other issues pertaining to the plight of pets. Rep. Ward has been an advocate for the humane treatment of animals throughout his legislative career.

Mindy Gilbert with the Society says, “Representative Ward has been a true advocate for the humane treatment of pets and other animals. Unfortunately legislation regarding dangerous dogs was not passed this last year in the Alabama Legislature. Rep. Ward worked hard to pass this bill in the last two sessions and is committed to this much needed Legislation and we are so thankful for his continued efforts”.

The Humane Society of the United States is based out of Washington, DC and is the world’s largest animal advocacy organization. Worldwide they have 14.5 million members. The Society works to lobby the passage of legislation across the United Sates such as burning of animals, fighting animals for entertainment and betting purposes and to classify and regulate dangerous dogs along with other numerous legislative initiatives.

“Because of Rep. Ward’s hard work in animal friendly legislation last year, Alabama had a very successful year with legislation that was passed” says Mindy Gilbert – Program Coordinator with the Society. Shelby County Commissioner Ted Crockett was quoted as saying “If it is true that Dog is man’s best friend, than it is a true fact that Cam Ward is dog’s best man!”
