Letter from the research director
Welcome to the Birmingham Business Journal's Who's Who in Law and Accounting. Through the work of our reporters, editors and industry experts, we have compiled a comprehensive list of the movers and shakers in the metro area's law and accounting professions.
The honorees on this list meet a certain set of criteria and include the following: presidents of the area's legal and accounting associations, such as the Birmingham chapter of the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Alabama Bar Association; the state attorney general; influential lawmakers from the Alabama Legislature who are lawyers or accountants; the top legal counsel from the top public companies, according to the Birmingham Business Journal's Book of Lists; and the managing partners at the top 15 law and accounting firms, also according to the Book of Lists.
Also included are the district attorneys from the metro-area counties of Blount, Jefferson, Shelby and St. Clair, as well as the chief judges from those counties and federal judges.
A total of 98 of the Birmingham area's leaders in the law and accounting professions - 61 lawyers and 37 accountants - are included in the 2006 Who's Who.
The entries are listed alphabetically and are separated by industry; accountants appear in the first pages of the section, followed by the lawyers and judges.
Also included are some graphics depicting statistical data on Birmingham's law and accounting sectors - the oldest of the city's large law and accounting firms and a five-year history of Birmingham's top five law and accounting firms, based on BBJ research.
We hope you will find the information in this section interesting and useful.
