Lawmaker to take potshots for CASA
Sunday, September 30, 2007
This year's CASA Roast features a generation gap that will likely result in spirited repartee. To be honored at the ninth annual CASA benefit on Oct. 9 at the Pelham Civic Complex is state Rep. Cam Ward. The Court Appointed Special Advocates of Shelby County has previously bestowed the dubious honor of roastee on state Sen. Jabo Waggoner, state Rep. Mike Hill, Judge Patricia Fuhrmeister, Shelby County commissioner Lindsey Allison, Mayors Bobby Hayes, Sonny Penhale and George Roy, Sheriff Chris Curry, and former state Sen. Butch Ellis. Cam is the youngest honoree, both in age - he's 36 - and years of service. Politics can be a tough game, and he may be dealt a rough hand from those far older and more experienced than he. The CASA Roast is great fun - for everyone but Cam - for a great cause. CASA is a nonprofit organization which recruits and trains volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the court system. A silent auction begins at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner and roast at 6:30. Tickets to the event are $100 per person, and corporate sponsorships are available as well. Call 243-8753. Planners include Corley Ellis, Helen Dean, Mary Woodfin, Mac and Glenda Stinson, Denise Graham, Rep. Mike Hill, Beth Chapman and Mayor Bobby Hayes. Scribblers runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. You may call Susan Strickland at 325-2452 or e-mail her at scribblers@bhamnews.com.
