2006 LEGISLATION

The 2006 Regular Session of the Alabama State Legislature ended on April 18th. This session was the last of the quadrinium. To view the final status of all legislative bills that were introduced during the session you can visit the official web site of the Alabama State Legislature

I feel like I had a very active and successful session.  I sponsored several bills during the session dealing with the removal of politics from transportation funding, victims’ rights legislation to protect our citizens from unnecessary attacks, prison reform measures, and cracking down on the sale of tobacco to minors. In addition to these bills, I co-sponsored the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, Sales Tax Holiday legislation, and fought along with Representative Blaine Galliher to strengthen the sexual predator laws in Alabama.

I was also proud to join several other Republicans in sponsoring tough immigration reform legislation.  While we were able to pass these bills out of the House Judiciary Committee they ultimately failed to come up for a vote before the full House.  This issue will definitely be a priority for next year.

Below are some highlights regarding several pieces of legislation I worked on during the recent legislative session. Thanks again for allowing me to represent you in Montgomery. Please feel free to call on me or any other member of the Alabama House of Representatives  when we can be of service to you. I look forward to serving you again during the 2007 Regular Session!

Sales Tax Holiday Legislation Enacted Into Law.

The bill passed unanimously in the House of Representatives in February and would allow consumers to purchase "school supply" items without paying the state's sales tax during the first weekend in August. (click below to read more)  The Alabama Senate approved the bill on the last night of the Regular Session.  As a co-sponsor of this bill I have worked hard for four years to support this legislation.

"Rep. Cam Ward is a true watchdog for Alabamians’ wallets. He was instrumental in the passage of the back-to-school sales tax holiday which will save millions of dollars each year for our citizenry. He also proved he is tough on crime through his work to increase penalties for organized retail theft- again saving millions in increased costs of goods due to this crime. Alabama is a better place to live, work and do business because of Cam's service. "

Bill to Allow Self-Defense When Home Invaded signed into law

The Right to Bear Arms is one of the most important protections given to the people under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.  In the past Alabama law has stated that a person who is defending themselves in their home must retreat before using deadly force to repel an intruder.  This bill allows for the use of deadly force when your home is invaded.  As a supporter of gun ownership rights I co-sponsored this legislation and am proud to have worked for its final passage.
